California Becomes 35th State to Require CO Alarms

Effective July 1, 2011, homeowners must install Carbon Monoxide (CO) detectors on each level of their homes, ideally near CO-emitting appliances (stoves, heaters, etc). Newly constructed homes have been required to install them since 1-1-11, and all other types of residences such as apartments and multi-family homes will be required to install them by Jan. 1, 2013.Whils no additional inspections are planned, they will be checked during the building/ remodeling permit process or when the home is sold. The American Medical Association estimates that 20,000 ER visits nationwide result from CO poisoning, further states that occurrences are underreported.
