Virginia Rejects Residential Sprinkler Mandate of Newly Enacted 2009 IRC - Sept. 2010

The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DCHD) unanimously rejected the mandatory requirement of 2009 IRC relating to use of fire sprinklers in all new housing construction despite pleas of consumers and firefighter groups. Costs were cited as the primary reason. Current cost estimates are an average increase nationally of about $1.75 to $2.00 per square foot, or about the costs of granite kitchen countertops! Chairperson Mullins says the issue will be revisited in the next code cycle. (2012)
